The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: Help please...?

A friend and I went to see the new movie The Imaginarium or Doctor Parnassus the other day. It was good and I really enjoyed it, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had understood what the friggin heck was going on.

The first part was fine, but after they found George (Tony) it began to get more and more confusing. Here are some things I would like to know about:

1. What is the purpose of the golden tube/whistle thing Tony swallows before he gets hanged?

2. Why does Tony keep changing faces when he goes through the mirror? (Now, I know Heath Ledger died part way through filming the movie and that is partially why, but they found a way to make the changing of his face fit into the movie but I don't know exactly how it fitted in, i.e. It was not just meant to go unnoticed that the actor had changed, the changes were made to fit in with the script)

3. What was the bad thing that Tony had done and why do people want to kill him? I did not really understand the whole 'charity' scene near the end of the movie.

4. What is the purpose of the jingly bangel around Valentina's ankle? (huhu...it's jingly...)

5. When Valentina meets the Devil there are two doors, one marked His and one marked Hers (I'm asuming these are doors to Heaven and Hell judging by the decoration of the doors). Why does she go through the door to Hell and doesn't end up in Hell, but in a new life- The one she wanted (the end scene where she and Anton are together with a child)?

6. What is being 'purified'?

So, yeah, I didn't really 'get' it. Please answer if you did infact 'get' it. And if anyone has a fully explained synopsis, that would be much appreciated.

kthxbai.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: Help please...?
1. It's a hard tube, when they hang Tony, if he has the tube on his throat he can breath beacause he doesn't have the throat closed.

2. He changes faces because it's the perfect world of the woman who came in before him, so Tony change to the %26quot;perfect men%26quot; for this women, in fact all the times they say that he is %26quot;just how I imaginated you%26quot;... the perfect men for them

3. Tony said he was involved in a money cheat but finally Tony sold children's organs to other countries. He didn't save them, he killed them to sell their organs.

4. It's just a gift of his father, nothing mystic, it's just important for the end, when a women have this jingly bagel Parnassus knows she's his daughter.

5. My only question is why the doors say: %26quot;Hers%26quot; and %26quot;His%26quot;, but she doesn't get free going through %26quot;hers%26quot;, she got free because of her father's sacrifice, that's why later the devil doesn't know where is she. Parnassus got her free sacrifing himself for her freedom.

6. I don't understand what do you mean, sorry

I wish I helped you ;)
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: Help please...?
The deal with the anklet with the bells on it is to keep her from running away (the bells make noise). Valentina makes reference to this fact twice, once with Anton on top of their house/bus/theatre and again in the imaginarium.

%26amp; the purified bit is that the imaginarium appeals to your weaknesses (ie drinking, sex etc) it shows you your weaknesses %26amp; then it makes you choose between giving into temptation or climbing the stairs. If you climb you come out %26quot;purified%26quot;, if you give in your soul goes to Mr Nick (the devil).

Thank-you very much for your help! (both) ^.^

Actually the purified bit was just a hustle of Tony's to rob the lady of her material possessions. Valentina gets away at the end because she did end up in hell. The devil told Dr. Parnassus he'd been after Tony's soul a long time and if Parnassus kills him he would give him his daughter back

To those of you what are in favor of the healthcare bill.............?

I hate using republicans vs. democrats, but need to in this instance. A group of Republican representatives told the majority of Democrats that they would agree to pass this bill if one thing was changed. The change would be nothing more than to include the President, and those in Congress, and the House to also be mandated to have their healthcare from the same bill they want for their constituents.

The answer was....no.

Why would you want, or ask anyone else to want something of this importance, when the people who wrote it, and will vote on it, refuse to use it?

What does that tell you, or should I say, what should that tell you?
To those of you what are in favor of the healthcare bill.............?
There have been a great many pointless symbolic gestures that have been made only to score points. I'm tired of politicians throwing us under the bus to score points while accomplishing zero. Yes, it also bothers me when citizens decide that their fellow Americans should be shut out from the programs that they enjoy, even though all pay taxes to support them.

The time has passed for palace intrigue and pointless gestures. Stop pretending. If you like the present system, admit that you are happy with tens or hundreds of thousands of people dying each year for lack of health care. The blood is on your hands, and you cannot wash it off. 鈭犅?
To those of you what are in favor of the healthcare bill.............?
Of course they'll keep their own health care.

Since they wrote it, they know the loopholes.

I just wrote this on the subject

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?鈥?/a>
it tells me the president is tearing this country apart, piece by piece.
No, he is going to take medicare away from seniors your parents or grand parents who have worked and paid in all their lives an try to increase medicade who live off the goverment now and most are not even Americans tax payers, who are here from Mexico an work far cash all over the counrty an pay no taxes. You young people think about this too, some day when you and your grandchildren have worked all your lives to pay off his big spending bill you will get nothing also
How could you talk about the Great One Obama amen praise he with thou funny ears. Even though he squandered $787 billion for nothing and laid a $2 trillion fraud on us during the biggest depression in history, what if he over stepped his limits set by the Constitution by leaps and bounds, Barry loves us and is only making us pay for our evil sins amen praise thou Mickey Marxist . And if God isn't able to have the authority of life and death on thou unworthy than who? You should get down on your knees, face Washington and thank the Mickey Marxist, Lord of the Under World, and a real nice guy too. Barry our savior. amen.
I am opposed to the bill.

Here is something I do wonder about. Who are these supposed millions dying in America because they couldn't afford health care? Who are they? Why don't they go down to welfare and get a medical card?

  • R&P: What do you think of "Sonata Arctica"?

Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from the town of Kemi, originally assembled in 1995. Their later works contain some elements typical of progressive metal.

Originally named Tricky Beans, the band played hard rock rather than the power metal with which they grew to fame. During their early career, they recorded three demos which were never sent to any recording label 鈥?Friend 'till the End, Agre Pamppers and PeaceMaker. In 1997 the band changed their name to Tricky Means, and from that point until 1999 their style was drastically changed, the change of sound was influenced by fellow Finnish power metal band Stratovarius. In 1999, the band recorded a demo entitled FullMoon in Kemi's Tico Tico Studios, which was their first real metal recording. The demo was sent to Spinefarm Records by a friend of the band and a recording deal soon followed, during which the band changed its name to Sonata Arctica.

Later that year, Sonata Arctica's first single, entitled UnOpened was released in Finland, and their debut, Ecliptica, arrived by the end of 1999 and had a worldwide release. From late 2000 to late 2001, the band worked on composing and recording their next album 鈥?Silence 鈥?which was released in June 2001. Their third album 鈥?Winterheart's Guild 鈥?was recorded with the help of the seasoned keyboard player Jens Johansson from Stratovarius who recorded the keyboard solos and released in 2003.

Reckoning Night was recorded in three months and released in October 2004. Both the single and the EP of this release remained on the top of the Finnish charts simultaneously for over six weeks. In 2006, the band released a live CD and DVD entitled For the Sake of Revenge, which was recorded in Tokyo in February 2005. Then, Spinefarm Records released a compilation album in order to get the most out of their contract with the band, since Sonata Arctica changed their recording label. The compilation is entitled The End of This Chapter and was released in Japan in August 2005 and in Europe on May 2006. On May 25, 2007, Unia was released. The album's first single, %26quot;Paid In Full%26quot;, was released on April 27, 2007. Interestingly, the cover for Unia features a barely perceptible image of a person's hair and eyes looking out through a crack in the background in the lower right-hand corner. It is likely an allusion to the person in the song %26quot;Caleb%26quot; on Unia.

Sonata Arctica's latest album was released on September 16th 2009 in Finland and September 22nd in the USA. Henrik stated that the new album will be in the same vein as Unia, but not as complex and darker. Singles from this album include %26quot;Flag in the Ground%26quot; and %26quot;The Last Amazing Grays%26quot;. On August 28, 2009, the music video of %26quot;Flag In The Ground%26quot; was released to the web.

R%26amp;P: What do you think of %26quot;Sonata Arctica%26quot;?
I'm a huge fan of SA, probably my favorite power metal band.

    Some of my favorite tracks...

    Blank File

    San Sebastian (Revisited)

    Wolf And Raven

    The Cage

    Draw Me

    White Pearl, Black Oceans...

I like all of their stuff really and seen them live 3 times, with Jani, and Elias.
R%26amp;P: What do you think of %26quot;Sonata Arctica%26quot;?
I have most of their stuff on CD, favorite is Silence ...Without it I could not live.
I think they're pretty awesome. I am going to see them in concert on April 22nd.
I love Sonata Arctica. I've been into them for a while now and they're probably my second favorite Power Metal band behind Kamelot. I love how they are really great power metal but at the same time don't have a lot of the cheesyness that a lot of power metal has. My favorite song by them is %26quot;Full Moon%26quot;.
Loved them for years now! Favorite song might be Full moon.
They are perhaps my favorite band. At first I didn't like their latest album but all of a sudden I can't stop listening to it. I think my favorite song is White Pearl, Black Oceans or To Create A Warlike Feel.

Best friends .. not so Best :| .....?

okay.. me and one of my BEST friends well we dont see eye to eye any more.. we get annoyed so easy with each other.. we have started to think each other is a snob kinda.. and we hate this.. we have been talkin and im goin go to her house tonite so we can talk it out... we wanna think of a way to do this were we both get our feelings out and no what and how we need to change... the change isnt for the other person.. its to better ourselfs.. if u have any advise please send it my way.. :) we were talking and this is what she said....

    To Me From Her:

You can be rude and hurtful when u say things, sometimes you care too much bout wat ppl tihink of you.. just sometimes but still, and you can be veryannoying and when ppl ask you to stop you just keep going on and on...

    .............................

    To Her From Me:

i think you are the same about the annoying thing... i dont lke how you say im mean to my mom we are just joking.. me and my mom talkked bout that the other day and how its how we joke .. i dont like how you get in the center of cheerleading, like you like to be right up front ever time and i also think u get offended to easy.

    ...................

kay that was a converstion we had a few hours ago..

so any help, we BOTH would appriate it :)
Best friends .. not so Best :| .....?
My first advice when you talk is to listen carefully, don't interrupt and don't get defensive.

    Second, try to turn things around in a less negative way. Instead of saying %26quot;I don't like when you...%26quot; try saying, %26quot;sometimes when you ________ I feel ______%26quot;

Be aware that when you're bothering someone and they ask you to stop, then stop. Try to take what your friend says as constructive criticism rather than she's bashing you or putting you down.

    Best of luck to you!

    1969 to 1970 - what changed?

    Hi

I have found a cool link to a jukebox website that plays the top 20 from every year from 1950 to 1999

    here is the link:

    http://upchucky.com/music-jukes/1969/pla鈥?/a>

Currently enjoying the top 20 from 1969. Before I listened to this, I played the top 20 from 1970.

I notice a distinct difference in the sound..

I am wondering why there was such a change.

The change was not incredibly fall over profound, but I can notice it.

What are peoples thoughts on this difference?

I would especially like to hear from anyone who was around at the time, but please, everyone who wishes to, give an opinion.

    Happy Friday from Australia!

Suggested Category: Cars %26amp; Transportation %26gt; Car Makes %26gt; Pontiac

    kinda makes sense..
    1969 to 1970 - what changed?
I was recording and playing during that transition. Probably the biggest change in the sound was the onset of Dolby systems. This is a noise reduction system in recording that took out a lot of the tape hiss you would get on older recordings, and also extended the dynamic range of the recording so you heard higher highs and lower lows. You also heard it sound cleaner than it did.

Another change was the movement from tube systems to solid state systems. They were accurate to the point of being scary. However, the warmth of the older systems, tube amps etc was lost. The recordings were clean as a whistle, but often lacked that %26quot;feeling%26quot; you heard on tube systems. They are STILL trying to figure that out.

You also had bands like YES, King Crimson, ELP and others getting more involved with MIDI digital systems, often replacing guitars and conventional keyboards with stuff that was never heard before. Again, it took some time to incorporate those things into music without overpowering it. But the line of demarcation came about right around 1970.

Finally, the times just changed. Music represented that change. The %26quot;Summer of Love%26quot; as it were was long gone, and music moved away from that. I always consider the song %26quot;Layla%26quot; to be the official death of the sixties. I know, it came out in 1970. But it signaled the end to rock and roll as I knew it then. I love the song. It's a true classic. But sometimes, it kinda makes me sad too.
    1969 to 1970 - what changed?
    The year
Production became better at around that time, not sure it was 1970 though seemed more like 1967 to me.
end of the beatles? im sure that changd the rock and or roll landscape irrevocably anyway
1969 was another year for me and you, another year with nothing to do. In 1970 I felt alright.

Edit: I feel bad about giving irrelevant answers, so I'll try to actually answer the question. In 1969 there was a whole lot of student unrest. People were all feeling like the world was going crazy. The music sort of reflected this. In 1970, people were feeling better. Couple this with disastourous concerts leading to people abandoning the hippie lifestyle, and you get some new music. Also, new recording technologies can drastically change music.
    music... drastically
1969 had woodstock, the Moon landing even had what I think was the end of sixry's movement, the murders out in La that Charles Manson done,he was a hippy turned mad man and Rollings Stones concert in Califorina that ended in a murder.Kent State Shootings. The Music was great but too much violence durning that period of time.
Drug overdoses started happening鈥︹€?good artist started dying!
It's hard to say exactly. But this was a period where the technology for recording music was progressing at a fast pace. A great example can be heard with The Beatles where Abbey Road has a much more %26quot;modern%26quot; sort of %26quot;polished%26quot; sound to it than their previous albums. Of course Abbey Road came out in 1969, so that doesn't really fit in with your theory, except that maybe they were ahead of the curve on that?

Specifically Abbey Road was recorded on an 8 track machine while their previous albums were recorded on a 4 track. It was a whole new %26quot;cleaner%26quot; sounding console.
I know more sub-genres of rock started to develop in the 70's - not sure it was exactly 1970 though. The use of synthesizers became very popular as well.

Republicans want less government. Is there really too much government in America. Let's consider a few events

ENRON, was there too much government oversight in that case? Should government oversight be loosened up? Or should we have more oversight so another ENRON can not happen? Alot of people lost their jobs, and pension plans.

    S %26amp; L scandal - similar question.

How about the subprime mortgages. Is it really best to have the marketplace take care of itself?

People are losing their homes, their cars, their jobs and their health because of this.

What about health care? The way the it is currently functioning, the incentive is for people to get sick. If people are sick, the pharmaceuticals are making money and able to pass on a %26quot;commission%26quot; to legislators to make certain that the system does not get changed. Or if it does get changed, the change will be such that the pharmaceuticals will make more money.

What about the fattening up of Americans. Why not outlaw unhealthy foods?

Seat belts? Was that too much gov?

Does a blanket statement of less gov still sound great?
Republicans want less government. Is there really too much government in America. Let's consider a few events
Not less government, just not more. If you want more government, move to a Socialist country for a year, and see how you like it.
Republicans want less government. Is there really too much government in America. Let's consider a few events
More Gov't oversight is never the answer

Unless of course you are a democrat and do not trust the people of this nation
    Yes, to your final question.

Pork and handouts are in excess. Watchdawg and national defense, etc. fine.

Less government does not mean NO government.
Yeah now lets think about how Repubicans have produced the biggest budget, deficit, and debt in the history of the country.
They want less government for you so there's more money for them.

Their government spending has been $14 trillion so far, according to the GAO.
    Ok wait...

You want government to control corporations...

You want government to tell us what to eat and what not to eat..

you want government to pretty much control the entire economy?

Jeez..you would have loved soviet russia.
Too much government caused the economy to be what is is now? Too much government, corrupted government.
Oh please. Only ONE Republican running wants less government, and that is Ron Paul.

You should be so lucky to get him.

Enron shows exactly how little good federal oversight did, and subprime mortgage bubbles are a direct result of the Fed and Banking practices which are some of the parts of government Ron Paul would get rid of. That is a huge POINT of his platform. They just print money when they want it and the value of money goes down. The stockmarket may SEEM to go up, but when corrected for the deflated dollar it is a very different story.

Yes, people are losing their homes, their cars, their jobs and their health and you have NO IDEA what is causing it, quite obviously, from your post.

If we removed ourselves from nationbuilding we could finance our debts including our domestic entitlements debts. And then could allow the next generation to get onto a better plan that would not make them pay for the debts of our parents' generation and our own, even worse than they would now have to do.

You want to outlaw unhealthy foods? Boy am I glad no one elected YOU to anything. And seatbelts were a negotiated compromise between the consumer safety folks and the automobile industry. The CS folks made it so the industry had to get seatbelt laws passed in a percentage of states or the air bag law (expensive) would go into effect. In fact, the industry failed to get quite that number, and now we have both. And people are killed by being trapped in a car, just as they are killed by being thrown free.

Less government sounds even better after reading what you wrote.

Pad your own world and render your own children incompetent to manage the least danger or decision. Leave my world alone.

_ re china, I would buy where I knew where the food came from, and if I didn't feel secure with China, I wouldn't buy it. The government isn't what drives MUCH of the testing of goods, it is consumer concern. That would exist, and businesses would have to address it, as a customer satisfaction issue.
You don't know what you are talking about:

Inform yourself, this a comic book to initiate your education.

    http://www.mises.org/books/TRTS/

When business fail, they go out of business. When goverment programs fail they continue at the expense of overtaxed citizens. Do we stil need rural eletrification?

Do we need failing public schools?

Enron is out of business and that is good. If it was a government entitity it would continue.
I've been trying to grasp the concept of Republicans wanting less government, but it never works. They say they want less taxes, but want to support perhaps the biggest budget crusher in history, the Iraq war. They say they want little government, but they want to tell us how to live our lives? They say that people shouldn't have the right to choose when it comes to abortions. But they want little government? Their argument contradicts itself on so many levels.
Yes, the less govt is involved the better off people are. No amount of govt oversight will stop things like the S%26amp;L scandal or Enron. People that take out a bigger mortgage than they can possibly afford take the chance of losing that house that is THEIR choice and they must live with it. Health care costs are rising because of the insurance industry, curtail them and make them non-profit and get them off the stock market. so what we're fat, again personal responsibility. seat belts? don't make me laugh, there are laws REQUIRING individuals to buckle up... again taking away the decisions from individuals limiting personal freedom. It all boils down to who do you trust more with your life ... yourself or the govt?
You have to understand with the Enron and S%26amp;L scandles there was coruption the highest levels of our government. There is a book called the Franklen Cover Up. It's by a Nebraska state Sen John Decamp. It really shows a person why and how these things happen.

There is a film about this as well, you can find it here.http://www.nw0.info/?p=Documentaries/Con鈥?/a>

I have to tell you it's a little disturbing.
That McCain guy is too old and confused.

He says you cannot trust Govt to do a good job but he wants power(govt)?

He says there are too many wasteful spending but he was there with his Friends BUSH.

He said the govt is not working but he is part of the very same govt?

He says he does not beleieve America is worse off compared to 7yrs back but now he says it is all bad in the white house?

Someone everyone - please give him a break. Do not vote for this guy with all the lobbyists on his back as Campaign advisers.

Oh - And his Vickki Isseman the lobbyist lady?
    %26quot;The average person is not smart enough to understand...%26quot;

If you're so much %26quot;smarter%26quot; than the %26quot;average person%26quot;, why are you asking the %26quot;average person%26quot; for advice?

Seems like you've got all the answers already.

    You are so smart.
The reason our country is in the toliet is bc we have way too much government. Our founding fathers understood that we need a weak federal government and strong state government, not the other way around.

Take the democrats for example our economy is going down the tubes bc of NAFTA, Clinton signed this. This is why we have lost 15% of our factories going overseas.

The reason medical cost are so high is again bc of too much government handouts like Medicaid. Hospitals, doctors are only allowed to charge the government so much for services, the docs and hospitals pass that loss unto us, hence insurance companies charge us more for premimums to recoup the loss, and Medicaid patients tend to abuse the system bc it's free for them, so what happens is we pay with our tax dollars, we pay higher deductibles, and we pay bigger insurance premimums. This is all due to the dems starting entitlement programs.

Whether you realize it or not Medicare taxes and S.S taxes are what pays for all these entitlments so you have a small percentage of people who pay these taxes all of their lives and when they need them they don't have access to them. Did you know that you can work for 40 yrs and they only count the last five yrs of your employment for S.S. benefits, it matters not that you got a letter stating that 15 yrs ago you had paid in all of S.S. taxes so you were eligible for S.S.but when you need it you can't get it bc some cheese eater had gotten the benefit of your money.

As for the mortagage crisis tough if you think you can afford a million dollar house on say 50,000 a yr. with an ARM mortgage then sorry why should more of responsible people's taxes go to bail you out you should have educated yourself better in the first place.

In closing conservatives like Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul are for less government telling you how to live and are for every one working and realizing the American Dream on their own. What good is it to have the government think and act for us bc a strong federal government is not for the people it's for the people in power.
So, you feel the government messed up? If so then how can more of such a messed up entity help improve things?

You want America to be a country of robots in which the government makes all of the decisions for us, this is a free country, what you are proposing is not, in fact it sounds more like the Ole' USSR, look how that turned out.
I don't think you understand the conservative mind set.

I want the right to make my own choices, I do not want a Nanny state.

I want the Right to be wrong, the right to fail in life, because in the end it is my choice, not yours and not the governments.

Lets look at some of the government regulations, like you mentioned car safety. If I don't want seat belts and air bags, I should be able to. These regulations actually hurt innovation. A car manufacture has to supply x amount of cars for crash testing to the government. Big companies have no problem with this. People who want to build out of their garage can no longer afford to, because their car would not be legal on the road. (I actually have a friend trying to build an electric car, half way complete and never to be finished because it is useless sitting in his garage.) I see the reason for safety enforcement, but should it not be up to the consumer in the end?

What about the 2009 all TVs must go to high definition FCC regulation coming down the pipeline? Yeah its great pushing a new technology. The big companies can afford to change all their equipment to high definition. (Cameras, edit bays, servers, transmitters etc... etc....) It is the little local broadcaster the will be going out of business, not the big networks. (I do see a need for the FCC, but many times it over steps its boundaries.)

I do believe there is a need for government I am not say all government is bad. Too much is bad, every time there is a government regulation, it takes away from your freedom of choice.
